DESIGN / FABRICATION / INSTALLATION
Created for the Railyard complex in Charlotte, NC, this piece takes a playful spin off the projects name, and recreates an aerial view of an actual railyard. This project consists of custom fabricated aluminum composite panels and UV resistant vinyl on custom engineered framing system. It was fabricated in-house.
Midtown 24 developer Granvil Tracy commissioned Airboat to develop public installations on site that would transform the spaces in to interactive environments. Depena and Airboat worked on the installations to provide playful and engaging projects that captured the participant's attention and kept them entertained when entering the main lobby and/or waiting for the elevators. The final products are an inviting combination of technology and art. Using custom camera tracking programming the installations follow the participant through the space, reacting to movements, gestures and responding visually via projections and video walls where the participant sees their visage on screen abstracted and larger than life. For instance, in the main lobby installation a piece entitled "Fragments" greets the visitor when they walk in the front door with randomly generated introductions and famous welcome quotes. As the participant walks through the main lobby space, the installation responds to their movement by both giving them important way finding information and creating a beautiful abstract representation of themselves on the screen. The piece is also programmed to gradually change color to coordinate itself with the changing time of day and light outside. In the elevator lobbies the participant can use their bodies to draw abstract shapes and lines on the screen. They can also use their bodies to move around words to form interactive magnetic poetry. These interactions culminate in a constantly evolving projection that creates a new composition each time it is used or the space is occupied. The video work also integrates itself into the architectural space by capturing the user's movement in the space and changing the projected surface of the wall.
ARCHITECTURE
These projects were realized while working for the architecture firm of Rene Gonzalez Architect in Miami, Florida. As a designer, Ivan was in charge of the formal design development, material research and construction elaboration.
INTERIOR DESIGN / FURNITURE DESIGN
This is an ideal case study project for the studio. A soup to nuts project. Airboat was hired by Ingalls and Associates gallery to handle all of it's physical and digital identity attributes. These included, ID/Logo, Website and finally this project, the interior design of the gallery itself. The plan was separated into 2 public gallery spaces that had different hierarchies for headline and "project room" style shows. The upstairs was designed to house the offices and art storage.
FURNITURE DESIGN
The first in a series of furniture design beginning production. The H Chair was made with a combination of computer aided manufacturing and hands on finishing. The chair's profiles were milled by a CNC machine and then the pieces were laminated together and varnished by hand.
Ivan’s various student work and research. Work completed and Pratt Institute, University of Miami and Harvard's Graduate School of Design.
